Airlines in Frankfurt

Frankfurt is the largest city in Hesse, one of the largest states in Germany. It is considered to be the financial capital and the transport hub of Germany. The European Central Bank and the German Stock Exchange are located in Frankfurt. Frankfurt is also well known as a host of various international trade fairs.

Frankfurt close to the center of Germany and thus it is the country’s transport hub. Travelers can reach Frankfurt via rail, air and motorways. In fact, the biggest airport in Germany is located near the city.

Getting to Frankfurt
It is easy to reach and leave Frankfurt by plane. Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest in Europe – it is second or third in passenger traffic to London’s Heathrow Airport and Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport. It is also ranked among the top ten airports in the world.

The Frankfurt airport (Flughafen Frankfurt am Main) is located 12 km (7mi) from the city center. It is easily accessible by car, bus or train.







Because of the various conferences and commercial events in the city, major airlines fly in leisure and business passengers to Frankfurt, connecting the city to the whole world. Lufthansa, Germany’s flag carrier and most other European airlines arrive in Germany by way of Frankfurt.

Other low cost airlines in Frankfurt such as RyanAir bring passengers to Germany through a smaller airport called Frankfurt Hahn Airport. This airport is not located near Frankfurt. Frankfurt Hahn Airport is in Lautzenhausen, which is approximately 120 km (75 mi) from the city. It can be reached from Frankfurt by car or bus. From Frankfurt Central Station, an hourly bus service takes passengers to the airport in about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Low cost airlines in Frankfurt usually operate only within Europe so you will have to check international connections from US or from other locations. Some US airlines provide direct flights to Frankfurt from major US cities.

When to visit Frankfurt
The best times to visit the city are in late spring and early autumn. Summers are sunny and warm at around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit). Winters can be very cold and rainy at around 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit) though there is hardly any snow.

If you visit during the months of the international trade fairs, make sure you book your hotel in advance as it will be difficult to find affordable accommodations during these times. Check the internet for schedules of these kinds of events. The biggest fairs are the Frankfurt Motor Show which is held every two years in mid September and the Book Fair, held yearly in mid October.

Things to do in Frankfurt
Frankfurt was destroyed during World War II and after the war it reinvented itself as a modern city. It is known for its high rise financial buildings and theaters, museums and galleries. Top tourist attractions include Goethe’s birthplace, St. Bartholomeus’ Cathedral and the Sachsenhausen (Frankfurt’s preserved old quarter), among others. Frankfurt’s skyline is also a site to behold, best viewed from the bridges in the Main River either during sunrise or sunset.
