Bus in Frankfurt
Using the bus is one of the truly convenient and economical ways of getting to your destinations in Frankfurt, given the city’s importance as continental Europe’s busiest hub for international and domestic flights. Using the bus is a delightful way of taking in the sights of the city after disembarking from the airport and proceeding to your hotel or to another city in Europe.
From the airport
When leaving Frankfurt International Airport, take public bus number 61 to the city’s southern train stop. The trip to the city center costs €2.20, which you pay to the bus driver. The journey takes 20 to 30 minutes and buses leave every 30 minutes from Terminal 1.
From the central bus station
With connections to the Hauptbahnhof Central Rail Station, the central bus terminal fields 44 routes that cover almost all of Frankfurt. Using the buses give tourists the option of paying only when they board, compared to the use of subways and trains that require pre-purchased tickets. Buses operate between 4 am to 2 am. There are also four added night routes that run between 1 am and 5 am. Bus routes connect you to fourteen streetcar lines and seven subway stops. Fares are usually €1.30 during regular hours.
Budget jet setting
Budget travelers have become experts in using bus connections in Frankfurt am Main to the “other Frankfurt” airport called Frankfurt-Hahn. Once dismissed as a barebones airfield in the middle of pasture, this airport that is about an hour and a half drive or 75 miles away from Frankfurt is now becoming the darling of all travelers who wish to save hundreds of euros on their flights. Cheap Ryan Air flights from the United Kingdom connect the city to exciting new tourist destinations in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. Tickets offered by private fliers are fairly cheap and sell out months in advance.
Convenient transfers using the Frankfurt Card
Visitors will find it convenient to shift between the bus lines, the U-Bahn subways, and streetcar routes in Frankfurt. The Frankfurt Card makes this easy, allowing the holder unlimited travel on the public transport system. Exiting to the airport is also made cheap and convenient with this ticket. You also enjoy big discounts in many of the city’s museums. The Frankfurt Card can be bought for a single day’s use or for two days. A single day ticket for one person is priced at €8.70. You can also buy a day ticket for a group of up to 5 persons for €15.00. Not available at vending machines, the Frankfurt Card can be bought at the arrival gate of Terminal 1, from rail way stations, travel agents and the tourist information kiosks at Hauptbahnhof or Römer.
Use the bus for sightseeing
Some private buses provide tourists the opportunity to reach attractions like the Saalburg, a restored old Roman fort near Bad Homburg. Other travel options using the bus available include the hop-on hop-off bus tour that comes with an audio tape describing the places of interest in Frankfurt, and is worth €8.70 for a group of five.
